Effectively, students need to learn how to develop applications in a very different environment than in the past--and the operating systems course that has been a staple of computer science programs forever may soon become obsolete.

I can think of a few:

* Searching non-text -- of course there are some beginnings, but that's very far from solved.

* Cross-language searching

* Even very rudimentary semantics, such as telling the difference between the 1000 posters who asks a questio, and the 1 (or sometimes 0!) who answers it (or ansers it *correctly*, say, as indicated by others posting back that the solution worked).

* Searching usefully on the increasing amount of relatively "formal" semantic information: say you add FOAF data to your home page, or someone respected puts up an OWL ontology of subject X.

* Given that sort of "semantic" search, reasoning in the face of the massive amount of contradictory claims out there (remember that if 2 sites assert contradictory facts, it takes a pretty smart program to avoid concluding that *everything*.

* Learning to hand users pages of the genre they care about: say, refereed journal articles vs. dicsussions on a forum for newbies.

* The ability to find things if you don't phrase it with the right keywords -- there's some capability for this, but I still occasionally find myself spending a long time looking for things unsuccessfully, until I chance across a particular phrase that makes it all spill forth.

* Distinguishing obsolete information from current (this shouldn't even be that hard in most cases). How often have you gotten "answers" that only apply to a software version that was discontinued 5 years ago?

That should keep us all busy for another decade or two.
